Summer Activity Ideas

Frozen toys

Materials
  • Small toys
  • Small containers
  • Or bowls
  • Water
Get Started:

Place the small toys, such as Lego figures in the plastic containers.
Cover with water and freeze overnight.
Let your child try and get the toys out using a selection of tools (eg spray bottles with warm water in, toy hammers etc).

Benefits

Sensory play encourages children to manipulate and mould materials, building up their fine motor skills and coordination.




Rock Painting

  • Smooth rocks
  • Paints
  • Paint brush
Get Started:

Start by finding some rocks that are large and smooth enough to paint on.
Paint the rocks, once dried either keep them or place them around your community.




Bee Bar

  • Plastic bowl
  • Stones
  • Water
Get Started:

Place a small bowl filled with plain water and with some stones in your garden.
Remember to refill daily.

If you see a swarm of Honey Bees, get in touch with the British Bee Keepers Association, and they will come and collect the swarm free of charge, as well as re-homing them.

Children who grow up with a love of nature are more likely to care and nurture their environment when they’re older.




Bananaberry Suckers

Ingredients
  • 2 Bananas
  • Strawberries
  • Honey
  • Lolly moulds
  • Blender
Get Started:

Wash your hands and then wash the fruit.
Cut the fruit into small pieces.
Place all the fruit and honey into the blender, and whizz until smooth.
Pour into the moulds and freeze.
Once frozen, enjoy!




Mud Pie Recipe

  • A pot
  • 2 cups of mud
  • 1 cup of grass
  • Half a cup of water
  • A Stick
  • Spoon
Get Started:

Place the mud and grass in the pot.
Add the water and mix together.
Put all of the mixture on a plate, and add the stick.
And you're done!

Benefits

The germs found in mud may help strengthen children’s immune system.
It helps increase the diversity of friendly bacteria in the body.
Playing with mud is a sensory-rich experience that encourages higher brain functions such as problem-solving, flexibility of thinking, abstract thinking, concept formation and complex perception.




Summer Scavenger Hunt

We bought some reusable A4 wipe clean pockets which can be written on.

Benefits

Scavenger hunts allow kids to practice problem-solving in a tangible way.

It helps to reinforce and act-out methods they have been taught by parents or teachers in a physical way, leading to increased retention of the lessons.

Scavenger hunts help exercise the mind by reinforcing problem-solving skills.

However, they can also be good exercise for the body.

You can incorporate clues that get children moving and running from place to place.

You can even get creative and have your child run to the top of a hill, wander into the woods or climb a tree for the next clue. Get those legs moving!




Hand Fish Puppets

Materials
  • Paint
  • Paper
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors
  • Lollypop sticks
Get Started:

Lay the paper down, apply the paint on hands.
Gently press the hands down on the paper, making sure not to move around.
Remove hand carefully and wait for the paint to dry.
Once the paint has dried, cut out around the handprint.
Turn the handprint to the side and stick the lollypop stick to the back.
Stick one googly eye on the palm side of the handprint.
Let the glue dry and you're done!




Fruit Kebabs

Materials
  • A variety of fruit
  • Chopping board
  • Knife (adult or use supervised only)
  • Child-safe knife
  • Wooden kebab skewers
Get Started:

Before the activity, place the wooden skewers in hot water.
Wash your hands and then wash the fruit.
Cut the fruit into small pieces.
Lay out the fruit pieces and carefully place onto the skewers.
Enjoy!

The body

Go on a stroll outside or in your garden for materials found in your garden.
Create a picture with items found, and then glue.
Let the glue dry and you're done!




Target Practice

  • Chalk
  • Water Gun
  • Or empty spray container
  • Water
Get Started:

Draw a "bullseye" on an outside wall with chalk.
Fill the water gun with water.
If using an empty spray container, make sure it is well washed.
Aim and fire at the bullseye, see if you can hit the centre!

Developing good hand-eye coordination is an important part of a child’s development.
It allows a child to direct and control their limbs, making it possible to interact with objects in the physical world more easily.
